Bay Industries, Inc. of Green Bay, Wisconsin, distributor of specialty building products, had decided to consolidate its multi-building operation into a new facility. The client’s main objective was to create a warm environment in which the owner, his employees and the community could enjoy and take pride in. The client wanted to create a warm and friendly atmosphere that was not only conducive to work, but also aesthetically pleasing for both workers and visitors.
The office was designed as a pair of two-story wings divided by an octagonal three-story atrium. Each wing would house a separate function of the operation and would be connected to the other through this bright and airy lobby.??The design of this project called for the harmonious and complementary use of multiple materials which include brick, stone, exterior insulation finishing systems, glass, aluminum, and of course, beautiful woodwork to create warmth while adding understated grace and beauty.
DeLeers Millwork, Inc. was commissioned to provide the stair system, ceiling beams, and reception desk for the lobby. Borrowed lights, door jambs, casing, wood base and laminate window sills were provided for all offices. All conference rooms received casework, conference tables and soffit trim by DeLeers. An entertainment center and other casework were provided for the executive suite. Additional millwork on this project included miscellaneous paneling, mantles, mouldings and secretary stations.
Wood species utilized in the Bay Industries headquarters included plain sliced Cherry, Maple, and Birdseye Maple inlays. Maple was used for the majority of the casework, with special accent areas incorporating Birdseye Maple in raised panel applications. Cherry was also specified for casework in various rooms to provide contrast and variety. A collection of species that would showcase lighter stains and accents like Birdseye and burls was a key consideration, as well as the owner's personal taste and perferences.
Coordinating the lobby stair system and lobby ceiling beams was an especially challenging aspect of this project for DeLeers as it involved close coordination with the general contractor, steel fabricator, and flooring contractor. The ceiling also needed to be coordinated with several other trades as DeLeers required scaffolding throughout the entire lobby. Weekly meetings with the contractors and owner were held to confirm details and schedules. Further mock-ups and shop drawings were provided and updated throughout the construction period.
The end result is a breathtaking lobby area complete with magnificent beams, an impressive reception desk and elaborate stair system. Throughout the rest of the building, paneling, radiused trim, columns and inlays lend further depth and interest.
DeLeers close attention to detail and the quality products employed are a reflection of the high standards of Bay Industries.
"DeLeers Millwork met all my expectations and provided a great finished product, on time. I look forward to our next opportunity to work together. Thank you."
